Failure of Boundary Walls in Bhopal: An Investigation

چکیده

In Bhopal, the widespread occurrences of cracking due to alternate swelling and shrinking in lightly loaded structures provided with traditional foundation like the strip footings in are covered by swelling soil. It is likely that foundation movements, due to shrinkage and swelling of expansive soil as a result of moisture content changes are responsible for more damage to building than any other single cause. This forced the Builders and Engineers to take notice and adopt suitable measures to overcome this problem. It relates to light loaded structure that is may not be possible to develop large enough downwards loads to exert the required pressure beneath the supports of the smallest practicable size. Further more, swelling can be prevented only in a localized zone beneath the footing (lying within the bulb of pressure of intensity equal to swelling pressure), where the stresses induced by the foundation are concentrated. The soil beyond the pressure bulb would still swell, and so will the soil in areas between the adjacent footings. The boundary walls are an important part of the building which stride boundary line and used to separate the properties, but it is not a part o9f building because building has a roof, floor, doors and windows while boundary wall has no such type of arrangement. KEYWORD : Swelling, shrinkage, settlement, design and quality in black cotton soil.

Numerical investigation of composite shear walls with different types of steel and concrete materials as boundary elements

The main objective of this study was to numerically assess the effect of boundary elements with different types of steel and concrete materials on nonlinear behavior of composite steel–reinforced concrete wall (CSRCW) by employing ABAQUS software. Two types of common steel profiles including box and I-shaped sections, located at the middle and extremities of the wall, were employed to assess th...

Effect of Debonding of Rebars on the Seismic Response of Boundary Elements of Lightly Reinforced Shear Walls

Rebar fracture in boundary elements of lightly reinforced shear walls in recent earthquake motivated research on the minimum longitudinal reinforcement applicable to shear walls. These researches lead to change in the ACI 318-19 requirement for minimum longitudinal reinforcement in boundary elements. New ACI 318 requirement increase minimum longitudinal reinforcement ratio for boundary elements...

Effect of Deformed and Plain Rebars on the Behavior of Lightly Reinforced Boundary Elements

Failure modes in recent earthquakes on lightly reinforced shear walls includes rebar fracture and out of plane buckling of its boundary elements. In latest edition of ACI 318 and also latest amendment of NZS 3101-2006 to avoid rebar fracture in boundary elements, the minimum reinforcement ratio for shear walls is increased. This experimental study investigates that rather than increasing reinfo...

Structural Behavior of Axially Loaded Composite Concrete-steel Plate Shear Walls

composite concrete-steel plate shear walls are the most critical resisting structural members that resist lateral and axial loads. This type of wall consisting of two steel faceplates presenting the outer skin, infill concrete and shear connectors which are used to provide the composite action of the steel faceplates with infill concrete in order to increase the strength and to reduce the local...

Analytical Investigation of MHD Jeffery–Hamel Nanofluid Flow in Non-Parallel Walls

In this paper, Homotopy perturbation method (HPM) has been applied to investigate the effect of magnetic field on Cu-water nanofluid flow in non-parallel walls. The validity of HPM solutions were verified by comparing with numerical results obtained using a fourth order Runge–Kutta method. Effects of active parameters on flow have been presented graphically. The results show that velocity i...
